The Hidden Cost of FOG: How Grease Causes Sewer Overflows and Expensive Repairs

Most municipal leaders understand that wastewater infrastructure is expensive to build, expensive to maintain, and extraordinarily difficult to replace. Yet one of the most common causes of avoidable system failures continues to flow down drains every single day.

Fats, Oils, and Grease, commonly referred to as FOG, may seem harmless when discharged from a kitchen sink, floor drain, or dishwasher. After all, in its warm liquid form, grease appears to move effortlessly through pipes. Unfortunately, what happens beneath our streets tells a very different story.

For municipalities, utility districts, and wastewater professionals, FOG is not simply a maintenance issue. It is an infrastructure issue, an environmental issue, a financial issue, and ultimately a public responsibility issue.

The true cost of FOG is rarely seen until something goes wrong.

The Problem Starts Long Before the Overflow

Once of the challenges with FOG is that it operates quietly.

Unlike a water main break or a mechanical failure at a lift station, grease accumulation often develops slowly over months or even years. Small amounts of grease enter the collection system from restaurants, commercial kitchens, food processors, institutions, and residential sources. Once inside the sewer system, the grease cools, solidifies, and begins attaching itself to pipe walls.

What starts as a thin coating eventually becomes a significant restriction.

As flow capacity decreases, the system becomes less forgiving. During peak usage periods, storms, infiltration events, or periods of high commercial activity, the sewer system can no longer handle the volume it was designed to carry.

The result is often a blockage, backup, or overflow that appears sudden but was actually years in the making.

Sewer Overflows Are Expensive: In More Ways Than One

When most people think about sewer overflows, they focus on the immediate cleanup costs. While those expenses can be substantial, they represent only a fraction of the total impact.

A typical overflow event can create costs associated with:

  • Traffic control and public safety measures
  • Environmental remediation
  • Regulatory reporting
  • Public communications
  • Property damage claims
  • Potential damage claims
  • Potential fines and enforcement actions

Residents generally understand that infrastructure occasionally fails. What they struggle to accept are failures that could have been prevented through proper planning, maintenance, and oversight.

The Impact on Collection Systems

Collection systems are designed to transport wastewater efficiently. They are not designed to transport large quantities of grease.

As FOG accumulates, municipalities often experience:

  • Reduced pipe capacity
  • Increased cleaning frequency
  • More frequent line jetting requirements
  • Higher maintenance budgets
  • Accelerated deterioration of aging infrastructure

What many communities fail to calculate is the cumulative cost of recurring maintenance. A sewer line that requires cleaning several times each year because of grease buildup becomes a permanent drain on operation resources.

The labor, equipment, fuel, scheduling, and administrative costs associated with repeated maintenance activities often exceed the cost of proactive prevention programs.

As I often tell business owners when discussing operational efficiency, there is a significant difference between solving a problem and continually managing the consequences of a problem. Municipal infrastructure is no different.

Lift Stations Often Become the Next Victim

Lift stations are particularly vulnerable to FOG accumulation.

Grease can coat pumps, floats, sensors, and wet wells, reduce operational efficiency and increase mechanical wear. Over time, the buildup interferes with equipment performance and can lead to:

  • Pump failures
  • Reduced pumping capacity
  • Increased energy consumption
  • Excessive maintenance requirements
  • Emergency repairs
  • Premature equipment replacement

The financial impact can be substantial. Replacing pumps or rehabilitating lift station components often costs many times more than implementing preventive FOG management practices upstream.

In many communities, grease-related maintenance has become so routine that it is accepted as normal operating procedures.

Wastewater treatment plants must also manage the consequences of excessive grease entering the facility. High concentrations of FOG can interfere with treatment processes, create operational inefficiencies, and increase maintenance requirements throughout the plant.

Challenges may include:

  • Equipment fouling
  • Reduced treatment efficiency
  • Increased sludge handling requirements
  • Odor issues
  • Additional labor and maintenance costs

When viewed across the entire wastewater system, from collection lines to lift stations to treatment facilities, the cumulative impact of unmanaged FOG becomes significant.

Prevention Costs Less Than Recovery

Once of  the foundational principles of effective management is understanding the difference between proactive and reactive behavior.

Reactive organizations wait until the problem becomes visible.

Proactive organizations identify the root cause and address it before failure occurs.

FOG management follows the same principle.

Municipalities that invest in comprehensive FOG programs often experience:

  • Fewer sewer overflows
  • Lower maintenance costs
  • Reduced emergency response expenditures
  • Improved regulatory compliance
  • Extended infrastructure life cycles
  • Better environmental outcomes
  • Lower tax burdens on the citizens that are served

Most importantly, they shift resources away from constant crisis management and toward strategic infrastructure stewardship.

The Responsibility We Share

Municipal wastewater systems represent one of the largest public investments any community will ever make. Protecting those assets requires more than budgets, equipment, and regulations. It requires a shared commitment among municipalities, businesses, institutions, and residents.

Restaurants must maintain grease interceptors.

Commercial facilities must follow best management practices.

Residents must understand that grease belongs in proper disposal systems, not down household drains.

Municipal leaders must establish and support effective FOG management programs.

When each stakeholder accepts their role, the entire system performs better.

The Bottom Line

The true cost of FOG is rarely measured by the grease itself.

It is measured in blocked sewer lines, damaged pumps, emergency callouts, environmental incidents, regulatory exposure, and infrastructure that wears out long before it should.

The irony is that most of these costs are preventable.

Every gallon of grease kept out of the collection system protects public infrastructure. Every properly maintained interceptor reduces risk. Every proactive FOG program helps communities avoid expenses that taxpayers should never have to bear.

In wastewater management, as in business and leadership, the most expensive problems are often the ones that could have been prevented.
